A Golden Solution to Youth Unemployment

A Golden Solution to Youth Unemployment
Written By: Shina Oyeniran
It is no more news, the staggering number of unemployed and under-employed youths in Nigeria. What might be a new information on the block though is that (as against what is always being commonly among Nigerians), there are jobs in Nigeria!
Before we go on I just want to say that, I’m a writer and just like most of my articles, this article is also a product of my experience and thought process. We may agree or disagree at some points, but I know that by the time you finish reading this article you would have almost or totally agreed with my view on the point of discussion because I bare the truth. Let’s shoot!
No doubt there is high competition for the little available jobs in Nigeria and to tighten the rope more, employers seek only the best of the best for recruitment. This now brings us to the main reason I wrote this article.
The fact is that job seekers in Nigeria lack the skills, intelligence level, and attributes (note that I didn’t mention certificate) that are required by companies (especially today’s corporate world organizations). Big organizations in order to hire the best hands have raised the job requirements level to fit global standard, but it is a pity that ‘our people’ who apply to these companies don’t even know this and so they never get considered for the jobs. Of recent, corporate organizations are being compelled to put more effort into ensuring the health and work environment safety of their staffs. This has made companies to earnestly seek the services of Human Safety Experts to assist them in playing that role. All of a sudden, people had done Health and Safety Management Courses became hotcake in the market. A few people who got informed about this development were rushing to take professional courses in this field (HSE I, II & III).  This is exactly the kind of thing I’m talking about. There are other in-demand skills like computer literacy (ability to use Microsoft excel spreadsheet and Microsoft powerpoint, ability to solve computer hardware and software problem, website design/management) that make employers beg you to work for them. On a more advanced level, computer programmers are also high in demand.
These organizations are no more interested in the different certificates job seekers carry about. They have seen more than enough certificates, what they want to know is if you can actually do what the certificate you carry says you are able to do. A golden solution to the problem of unemployment that I see is that, job hunters should research skills that are in hot demand by the big recruiting companies and then they should try their best to equip with such skills.
Some of the attributes that job seekers must possess and that are in high demand at the big companies include hardwork, proactive thinking, strong initiative ability, and ability to speak more than one language and to be able to work across cross-cultural groups (i.e For example if you are a Yoruba, you should be able to work conveniently in any of their branches either in Kaduna or even Nsukka)
You want to get your dream job? Then I believe if you can acquire the skills and attributes in demand by the big companies, you are most likely your dream job in no time.
See you at the top!

Be the Best in Your Field

Micheal Jackson, was Best in R&B and Pop music during his lifetime
BE THE BEST IN YOUR FIELD

Always strive to be the best in your field of specialization. There are so many people who are in that field also but among all people you should strive to make yourself known by being the best. Someone advised me years ago that wherever I find myself, I should try to be among the best and not among the rest.
Hardwork and integrity are characters that can make you the best in your chosen field.
In every area in life, there are always people who are the best. There are people whose names are mentioned first when that field of life is spoken of. There is no gain in being a back-liner.
Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States and a Nobel prize winner said, “Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the great twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat”
The best comfort you can give your spirit is to fight to be at the top of your game; to rank with the leaders.
Below is a list of people and brands with great spirits who are the best in their chosen fields:
v  Talk about footballers, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo jumps to mind.
v  Talk about swimming and Ian Thorpe jumps to mind.
v  Talk about golf and Tiger Woods jumps to mind.
v  Talk about computer software and Microsoft jumps to mind.
v  Talk about mobile phones and Nokia jumps to mind.
v  Talk about male lawn tennis and Roger Federer jumps to mind.
v  Talk about football coaches, José Mourinho and Alex Ferguson jumps to mind.
v  Talk about computers and Hp jumps to mind.
v  Talk about churches in Nigeria and The Redeemed Christian Church of God jumps to mind.
v  Talk about automobiles, Toyota, Honda, and Mercedes Benz jumps to mind.
v  Talk about Lawyers in Nigeria, Afe Babalola and Gani Fawehinmi jumps to mind.
v  Talk about men of God in Nigeria and Pastor E.A. Adeboye jumps to mind.
v  Talk about Universities in the world, Harvard, Oxford and Cambridge jumps to mind.
v  Talk about sport wears, Adidas and Nike jumps to mind.
v  Talk about web search engines and Google.com jumps to mind.
v  Talk about social networks, Facebook and Twitter jumps to mind.
v  Talk about Apostles in the Bible and Apostle Paul jumps to mind.
v  Talk about rich people in the world and Bill Gates jumps to mind.
v  Talk about Biros in Nigeria and BIC jumps to mind.
v  Talk about noodles in Nigeria and Indomie jumps to mind.
v  Talk about beer in Nigeria and Star jumps to mind.
v  Talk about football clubs, Real Madrid FC and Barcelona FC jumps to mind.
v  Talk about clubs in England, Arsenal FC, Manchester United FC, Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC jumps to mind.
v  Talk about football clubs in Nigeria and Enyimba jumps to mind.
v  Talk about rappers in Nigeria, Phyno and Olamide jumps to mind.
v  Talk about businessmen in Nigeria and Dangote jumps to mind.
v  Talk about soft drinks in the world and Coca-cola jumps to mind.
v  Talk about Fuji Music in Nigeria, Osupa, Pasuma, and K1 De Ultimate jumps to mind.
v  Talk about Reggae music and Bob Marley jumps to mind.
v  Talk about road and bridge construction and Julius Berger jumps to mind.
v  Talk about satellite dish television and DSTV jumps to mind.
v  Talk about basketballers, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant jumps to mind.

The list goes on and on; what is your field? How much do people know you? You too can be like one of these people. Your name too can be mentioned first when a particular field is spoken about. Don’t think you can’t do it, you can do it! You just have to tell yourself I CAN!
All these people you see mentioned above are not supernatural beings or gods; they are human beings with one head, two eyes, two hands, two ears just like me and you. All they just decided to do was to work harder than everyone else in their field; they just woke up one day and decided to start putting in their best into all they are doing. They decided to commit themselves to their cause and die for being the best if need be.
There is no magic about it; you just have to decide to make your life count for something. If you feel the world stage is too big for you to take on now, then start with your school, start with your local government, start with your state, start with Nigeria; decide that people must also start calling your name too. Determine that fame must come to you whatever the (good) cost.
You can be the best if you believe it and work towards it determinedly. See you at the top, I love you all!
